Roller Gun I

Back to Rollergun-II

RG-I was similar to RG-II, except that the barrel was much shorter. I had a 90cm barrel and a 1.25m x 7mm spear (RG-II has 120cm barrel and 1.5m x 8mm spear). The idea was to build a very short but powerful gun. On my first hunt with it, I shot a few reef fish. it proved accurate and fast. Then I shot a 12 kg yellowtail in the spine. The gun tracked easily on the fast moving 'tail, and accurately broke the spine, but did not penetrate deep enough to retain the fish. Yellowtail are determined fighters and it managed to elude me. I hate it when this happens! The RG is of course much more cumbersome to reload. With another gun I could have reloaded and possibly found the fish on a subsequent dive. Anyway, after this I rebuilt the RG to be more powerful. RG-I's rollers were re-used for RG-II, but I used a new handle and barrel and spear. I made a home-made muzzle for the ex RG-I. It is now my favourite close hunting gun. It is very accurate. Photo of muzzle to come soon!
